About Alwyndor

Set within beautiful grounds in the seaside suburb of Hove, Alwyndor delivers on-site Residential Living and outreach community Home Support and Healthy Living. The vision that has become the modern-day Alwyndor stemmed from the heart of a young woman named Dorothy Cheater, who never lost sight of her desire to care for others.

Dorothy Cheater was the youngest child and only daughter of Henry Percival and Agnes Riddle. Dorothy grew up on her parent’s Dunrobin Road property and lived on the property for her entire life.

Dorothy cared for her parents at Alwyndor until their deaths in 1942 and 1943 and then set about converting Alwyndor into a convalescent and rest home for returning World War II servicemen and the aged.

In 1976, the then Brighton Council bought four acres of the land holding to build a hostel, nursing home, and rehabilitation centre. Upon her death in 1988, Dorothy bequeathed the remaining 2.5 acres of gardens adjacent to the aged care facility.

Alwyndor’s ownership was transferred to the City of Holdfast Bay following the amalgamation of the Brighton and Glenelg Councils in 1997. It remains one of South Australia’s few remaining local government-owned aged care facilities.

Today, the facility provides some 134 residential, dementia, respite care beds, transitional and care awaiting placement beds, together with allied health and wellness program and home support packages that operate on an outreach basis within the broader 'community.

Alwyndor boasts a range of state-of-the-art resident amenities including on-site physiotherapy, podiatry, social work, speech therapy and occupational therapy services, a bus, café and shop, hairdressing salon, GP and dentist consulting suites, men’s activities shed, extensive grounds and gardens with BBQ facilities, to name just a few.

With Dorothy’s vision, Alwyndor strives to remain committed to maintain her legacy of providing quality care to our elderly community.
