A touch of magic for memory support

The Tovertafel offers light and colour-based sensory activities for people with cognitive challenges

Described as a ‘magic table’ the Tovertafel offers light and colour-based sensory activities for people with cognitive challenges – and now, one resides permanently at Alwyndor.

The Tovertafel projector was installed in August and is being used by the Memory Support residents and Day Respite clients.

It is coordinated by Alwyndor’s lifestyle and occupational therapy teams and supported by our therapy assistants.

The Tovertafel games are designed to develop and maintain the skills of those people using it, in an engaging way.

It can be used by anyone, but it is particularly beneficial for people living with cognitive challenges including dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Alwyndor launched a fundraising campaign to purchase the device – and a generous donation of $8,000 by one of Alwyndor’s visitors, helped achieve the fundraising target of $20,000.

The Memory Support Group is suitable for people with a diagnosis of mild to moderate dementia and activities include Tovertafel games, shared morning teas and seated exercises. The class is held every Tuesday at Alwyndor from 10am – 12 noon.
